Why play vinyl when you can download mp3 tracks or play an old fashioned CD? Well it is like the difference between fresh bread from the bakery and a packaged loaf from the convenience store.

Some contemporary artists (e.g. Duffy) even launch vinyl albums today in addition to their online / CD offerings.
It is however always worthwhile to be cautious when buying a brand new vinyl disc.
Original albums in mint condition from the pre 90s will typically give a superior sound due to the mass volume production runs. Such albums benefit from higher quality and deeper grooves, particularly from the late seventies when analogue recording reached its' technical peak.
