there are nearly 40 printed uk photo magazines and numerous websites and photo blogs.
the explosion in magazines and sites followed the digital revolution, however it does make it difficult to decide what to read! many new digital photography magazines were launched by publishers to take advantage of the growing consumer interest in the catagory, but often the articles in these magazines lack integrity and expertise.
it is similar with many websites.
We have only awarded zeebrastripes to magazines and sites which we believe provide insights and have original views.
please be aware that the printed magazine industry is under financial pressure, due to the increasing popularity of web solutions (whoops!) so you may find their websites sometimes playing second fiddle to their printed mags, so if you like their work, please go out and buy a real magazine, otherwise eventually their site may fold also!
the oldest photo magazine in the world. this weekly magazine continues to include interesting articles and is a must buy for latest camera and equipment prices. even though it is owned by a very large magazine group (IPC - part of Time Warner), the magazine has managed to maintain its own distinctive identity. at over 30k magazines sold per week, it is the highest circulation photo mag in the UK.
all photo mags run articles on black and white photography, but this monthly magazine is the only to one to devote their pages 100% to the art. whether shot on film or digital, enduring black and white photography does require a different mind-set and set of skills to be at it's best. the magazine does not have a full website, however we provide the reference to their publisher's site containing information and back issue data on the magazine.
British Journal of Photography
this weekly mag has tradtionally been the more radical, with latest news on issues such as photo press rights and fashion photographer trends. favoured by pros and photo students, this magazine can inject you with a sense of photo avant-garde.
this monthly UK magazine is very readable for non pros and pros alike. with a new editor the magazine continues to build circulation while others are falling. each edition typically has indepth articles about photographers or techniques.
the mother of all photo websites. primarily for checking out equipment specs and review, the people that run this site work closely with camera and lens companies. you can be sure that reviews are very up todate and objective, being made by knowledgeable writers who have first access to equipment. the site is popular in the US but is UK based and has now amassed an impressive collection of past reviews of older cameras, very useful if you are buying second hand digital cameras.
