well in their defence you can argue that wine clubs have single minded expertise over their rivals and this should mean better selections and more importantly some more risky selections that are spot on.
you may know that new world wine is often marketed to be safe. I.e a chilean merlot is often a double blend, comprising of a blend of merlot grapes from different regions of chile, plus a minority of other grapes.
the outcome is safe and saleable drinkable wine, meaning people can trust and enjoy chilean merlot.
old world wine tends still to come only from one region or vineyard. the result can be more hit and miss, meaning disappointment or a real winner.
wine clubs can have their part to play to help you buy the right old world wine at the right price.

laithwaites appears to be four times the size of it’s nearest rival, the wine society. check the guardian article referenced. the writer claims laithwaites are not sharp on prices but give you access to some good wines. the article is 2008 so change may have taken place.
